Underwater Pyramids off Cuba
Caribbean Altantis: Underwater Pyramids off Cuba
A team of Cuban scientists led by Paulina Zelitsky ,and experts from the Canadian exploration firm Advanced Digital Communications (ADC) are trying to determine if a strange rocky formation discovered in the depths of the Caribbean facing Cuba could indeed be a strange sunken city, belonging to a hitherto unknown civilization.”
“We are in fact dealing with some highly peculiar structures which have captured all of our imaginations, ” said Cuban geologist Manuel Iturralde in a conference, after having researched the site for a week. “I would be hard pressed to find a geological explanation for this,” he added. Analysis of the rock samples in coming months shall shed more light on the formation, located facing the Guanahuacabibes Peninsula in Cuba’s western end. Iturralde, the director of the Museo Nacional de Historia Nacional, has joined the Canadian firm in its efforts to find the mystery of the rocks, which are of polished, geometrical granite. The structures–reminiscent of pyramids, roads and other edifices, lie at a depth of over 600 meters (approx. 2,500 feet) in a 20 square kilometer area. ADC has suggested the ruins could correspond to a civilization which colonized the Americas thousands of years ago, possibly settled on an island which sank to a great depth as the result of a cataclysm, such as an earthquake.
This theory, and its inevitable parallels to the mythical city of Atlantis, has been greeted with skepticism by international scientists who consider the depth and antiquity of the find to lack credibility. ADC has placed them at a minimum of 6,000 years old. Some European archaeologists noted that the rocks, discovered in July 2000 while ADC looked for Spanish treasure galleons using sonar, could be a natural caliche formation. But Iturralde’s conclusion that there is no obvious natural explanation has lent credit to ADC’s theory.
“It seems possible that there is some kind of intelligent design in the layout and planning of the structure,” explained Russo-Canadian oceanographic engineer Paulina Zelitsky of ADC. “I’ve worked in this field for 30 years and I have never seen natural structures shaped with such intelligent planning and symmetry. From the first moment I suspected they were not natural formations.”
Althouth Iturralde presented evidence that an earthquake did occur in the site, and the possible subsidence of the ground, he abstained from concluding that the rock formation was not natural. However, should such a theory be proven, it would revolutionize an understanding of the history of the Americas, he noted.
In Search of Human Signs
This would alter our knowledge of humans and the evolution of the Americas,” noted Iturralde. “Recently, a French archaeologist found evidence that there were persons in South America 40,000 years ago, something completely unexpected. For this reason we must always be open to the unexpected and which are beyond the framework of knowledge of our times…we have found something no one suspected,” he said. ADC plans to send a specially-designed robot to the site within months to collect samples of the rock samples and sedimients buried there in order to establish dates and find signs that it was once on dry land. It will also seek out any sign of human life, such as engravings, sculptures or artefacts. “But retrieving samples of these structures will not be easy, because they seem to be granite. And drilling granite at a depth of 600 meters isn’t easy,” cautioned Zelitsky, adding that the discovery could be a history-making one. “We’re talking about the origin of the Americas here. There are many hypotheses as to how the continent was settled. It is a great controversy and I believe that our discovery will constitute the first physical evidence of the true origins of how civilization developed in the Americas.
