"SACRED NATURE: ANCIENT WISDOM AND MODERN MEANINGS by ADRIAN COOPER
This new title explores how 150 modern travelers reconcile their spiritual faiths with the challenges of interpreting wild, natural environments: tropical habitats, deserts, frozen landscapes, seas and oceans. It is an exploration of how these travelers from North America, Europe and Asia find their faiths variously compatible with a detailed knowledge and understanding of the natural world. For eleven years, between 1985-1996, these travelers worked with Adrian Cooper talking, listening, sharing and learning from each other. They discussed their personal discoveries of sacred treasures in this planet's wild, natural areas. They drew inspiration from stories and journeys which were marked by awe and wonder as well as intense physical hardship, loneliness, despair, bereavement, profound contemplation, renewal, healing and enlightenment. Some of these journeys have contained the most important turning points in these travelers' lives. I recommend Adrian Cooper's book to all students and lovers of the sacredness which this planet inspires.

"The Quest for the Nine Maidens" by Stuart McHardy. For too long history has been suffering from an almost total masculine bias. The militaristic, heirarchical and financial interests of a tiny group of humanity in the West have been dictating how we, and they see our common past. S.McH In this ground-breaking new work the author investigates the ancient sisterhood of pagan priestesses the Picts called the Nine Maidens. Shape-shifters,healers and prophetesses the Nine Maidens were closely linked to significant goddesses and gods in many societies around the world. Whether as Valkyries taking dead Vikings to Valhalla, as Morgan and her sisters convoying king Arthur to Avalon, as the keepers of Cerrridwen's Cauldron of Poetry and Inspiration, as the ecstatic Maenads and Muses of Greece, as the Druidesses of the Isle de Sein off Brittany, time and again these enigmatic sisterhoods crop up myth and legend. In some cases, as the Witches of Caer Lyow or the sisterhood of Mont Dol in Brittany they were clearly female warriors while in Dark Age Scotland amongst the Picts, they were thought of as saints. In Brittany, Scotland and Wales they were associated with ancient mother goddess figures and in Iceland they travelled around giving prophecies as late as 1000BC. In Scotland, Nine Maidens Wells continued to be the focus of Beltane festivities into the twentieth century. The oldest reference to the is a cave painting showing nine women dancing round a priapic male in some kind fertility rite - from over 15000 years ago. Other groups of them come form shamanistic belief in Siberia, founding mythology in Kenya and in the beliefs of Amerindian peoples. Whether the remnants of a once universal belief system or local developments of some archetypal human thought the Nine Maidens widespread existence tells us there is much more still to be known abut the human past. Most of the history of our species has been written by men, for men and about men - the worldwide stories of the Nine Maidens suggest there is more, much - much more -to learn of o the human story.

"The Alphabet Versus the Goddess: The Conflict Between Word and Image" by Leonard Shlain Reviews
"Literacy has promoted the subjugation of women by men throughout all but the very recent history of the West," writes Leonard Shlain. "Misogyny and patriarchy rise and fall with the fortunes of the alphabetic written word."

The very act of learning written language, he argues, exercises the human brain's left hemisphere--the half that handles linear, abstract thought--and enforces its dominance over the right hemisphere, which thinks holistically and visually.

A fascinating account of the evolution of our male and female ways of knowing" --Clarissa Pinkola Estes, author of Women Who Run with the Wolves.

Synopsis A profound and provocative book which proposes that alphabetic literally rewired the brain and changed culture, religion, and history--written by the acclaimed author of "Art and Physics: Parallel Visions in Space, Time, and Light" (soon to be a three-part MSNBC series). 35 illustrations. Shlain argues that, with the advent of literacy, the very act of reading an alphabet reinforced the brain's left hemisphere - linear, abstract, predominantly masculine at the expense of the right holistic, concrete, visual, feminine. This shift upset the balance between men and women, and initiated the disappearance of goddesses, the abhorrence of images, the decline of women's social and political status, and a long reign of patriarchy and misogyny. The Alphabet Versus the Goddess tracks the correlations between the rise and fall of literacy and the changing status of women in society, mythology, and religion throughout European history, and in other cultures as well. Shlain goes on to describe a colossal shift he calls the iconic revolution, now under way, that began in the nineteenth century: the return of the image. The invention of photography and the discovery of electromagnetism have brought us film, television, video, computers, advertising, graphics - and a shift from the dominance of the left hemisphere to reassertion of the right. Image information has gradually been superseding print information, and in the resulting social revolution women have benefited as society shifts to embrace feminine values.

About the Author Leonard Shlain is the author of Art & Physics: Parallel Visions in Space, Time, and Light. He haswritten for many publications, and lectures widely. He is the chief of laproscopic surgery at California Medical Center in San Francisco. He lives and writes in Mill Valley.

"The Chalice and the Blade: Our History, Our Future" by Riane Tennenhaus Eisler
A masterful job of putting into perspective how we as Westerners got to be how we are, out of touch with our intuition, abusive of the planet, institutionally condesending to feminine energy in all of its manifestations, and addicted to a "might makes right, male dominated" agenda.

The Chalice and The Blade puts into words and affirms with scientific evidence what we all intuitively know: there is something wrong with the picture that has been presented to us as a civilization over the past 3,000 years. There is something that our more recent ancestors bought into that has led us astray from our Earth Mother. And more importantly, there is a way for us as a civilization to find our way back home, to work together to save the planet and ourselves.

Viviane's quest is to find a king who will be loyal to Avalon as well as to Christianity. This king will be Arthur. Gwenhwyfar, Arthur's Queen, is an overly pious, fearful woman who successfully sways her husband into betraying his allegiance to Avalon. Set against her is Morgaine of the Fairies, Arthur's sister, love, and enemy - and the most powerfully believable person in the book - who manipulates the characters like threads in a tapestry to achieve her tragic and heroic goals. "When God Was a Woman" Merlin Stone
Traces the Goddess from pre-history onwards with great depth of insight. The knowledge of the fruit of the tree [of the Goddess] of Good and Evil is overpowering, this knowledge is the power of sexuality and abundance.

We have been living with these belief systems for over 2000 years in an attempt to eliminate any allegiance to the so-called fertility 'cults' i.e. Goddess Worship. Many women, even after the time of Christ were still practicing some of the "old ways" of Diana. The biblical authors wanted to retell the story of creation so as to firmly implant in the minds of the people "that women were to be restricted and controlled or else they would corrupt nations. We cannot have the women running rampant with their desires, we must control sexuality by controlling women and their children."

Why this great repression of the feminine? Just as any conqueror rewrites his/herstory, the bible authors [men] needed to insure their victory. When you tell someone long enough that they are unworthy of ruling, they are unclean, and they are only here to serve their masters, over time they will believe it. The overthrow of the Goddess Religion was an economic and political victory for the followers of Yahweh. It was important to have the father rule the family, the city, and the nation, and paternity was vital to maintaining that power.

The Goddess embraces all sexuality and abundance. Many women had children as part of offering their sexuality to the Goddess in the temple [Esphesus]. Paternity was not an issue and all children were nurtured and reared by the community. The children took their mother's name, and these same children succeeded their mother to the throne. Males were not oppressed or dominated by females in the Goddess Rites. Only under partriarchy, does the notion of domination take place -- "rule of the fathers."

"THE CULT OF THE BLACK VIRGIN" By Ean Begg The author researches the dozens of previously unknown images of the Black Virgin especially in Italy and Spain. The first part is an 150-page historical essay, examining the evidence for the continuation of the cults of Isis, Cybele and Dark Artemis in southern Europe through the "Dark Ages" and mediaeval Europe and ranging through the image of both the Virgin Mary and the Magdalen, the Goddess as Whore, the Templars, the Cathars and evidence for a darker side to earlier Christianity. She describes and catalogs hundreds of known and suspected Black Virgins across Europe, the Americas, and beyond.

The Isaiah Effect: Decoding the Lost Science of Prayer and Prophesy draws on new discoveries in quantum physics, as well as a variety of spiritual traditions and religious documents--including Tibetan, Mayan, and Hopi prophecies; Nostradamus; and the Dead Sea Scrolls. From these sources, author Gregg Braden believes that he has recovered "a lost science with the power to bring a lasting end to all war, disease, and suffering; initiate an unprecedented era of peace and cooperation between governments and nations; render destructive patterns of weather harmless; bring lasting healing to our bodies; and redefine ancient prophecies of devastation and catastrophic loss of life." Mass prayer is the technique that will allow all of these goals to be achieved, Braden says: "the choice of many people, focused in a specific manner, has a direct and measurable effect on our quality of life." The book includes careful readings of ancient texts, prophetic pronouncements, and mini-travelogues (Braden leads groups to visit sacred sites around the world), and its arguments may strike some readers as far-fetched. But Braden's basic idea--that hope can change the world in concrete ways--is a very good one.

"Awakening to Zero Point : The Collective Initiation" by Gregg Braden
There is a process of unprecedented change unfolding within the earth. You are part of the change. Without knowledge of the artificial boundaries of religion, science, or ancient mystic traditions, the change is characterized as dramatic shifts in the physical parameters of Earth accompanied by a rapid transformation in human understanding, perception, and experience. This time is historically referred to as "The Shift of the Ages." As science witnesses events for which there are no reference points of comparison, ancient traditions say that the timetable is intact; the events of "The Shift" are happening now. Each event carries with it a similar message, and is a by-product of something much more significant than the event itself. During key moments in human history, wisdom has been offered allowing individuals to experience rapid change without fear. This is one of those moments. You are living the completion of a cycle that began nearly 200,000 years ago, and a process of initiation that was demonstrated over 2,000 years ago.

"Walking Between the Worlds : The Science of Compassion" by Gregg Braden
Ancient calendars indicate that we are living the completion of a grand cycle of human experience. Within the last years of this cycle, we have been asked to accommodate greater change in less time than at any other point in recorded human history. Our bodies, immune systems and emotions have been challenged to unprecedented levels. At the same time, science is witnessing phenomenon for which there are no reference points of comparison. Two thousand year old texts remind us that compassion is an accessible state of awareness determining the quality of our well being. Are we witnessing the birth of a new species of human genetically shifting to accommodate this time of change? Recent data demonstrates that compassionate emotion may be our forgotten switch to turn "ON" powerful codes of genetic options. Following his best selling book, Awakening to Zero Point: The Collective Initiation, Gregg Braden explores these and other possibilities in his latest work marrying science, relationships and the ancient messages of compassion. Presented for the first time: A step by step guide to the ancient sciences of compassion and blessing The Essene mysteries of relationship illustrated with case histories and true life accounts The latest research confirming the role of emotion in our immune response and life giving relationships The opportunity to redefine hate, fear, separation and the role that they play in your life! Could our greatest challenges of health, relationship and survival be our way of redefining accepted at some point biological limits in our ancient Memory?

"The Indigo Children: The New Kids Have Arrived"by Lee Carroll, Jan Tober
A new generation of super psychic kids are being born on our planet with extraordinary healing abilities. What is an Indigo Child? The Indigo Child is a child who displays a new and unusual set of psychological attributes which reveal a pattern of behavior generally undocumented before. This pattern has common unique factors which demand that parents and teachers change their treatment and upbringing of them in order to achieve balance. To ignore these new patterns is to potentially create great frustration in the minds of these precious new lives. • Can we really be seeing human evolution in the kids today? • Are they smarter than we were? • Why do so many of our children today seem to be "system busters"? • Why are they committing suicide and killing each other? • Why are so many of our best children being diagnosed with ADD and ADHD? • Are all of them really ADD...in need of being drugged, or is there more to this story? • Are their proven working alternatives to Ritalin? Join international authors and lecturers Lee Carroll and Jan Tober as they bring together some very fine minds to discuss and expose this exciting premise. Many alternate methods of treating ADD are presented, and you won't believe some of the spiritual aspects of this study! These children are very different, and represent a great percentage of all the children being born today...worldwide. They come in "knowing" who they are, and must be recognized and celebrated with the correct guidance.

Boyer takes a number of themes such as Ritual and Magical, Mythical and Mythological and Ancient Witnesses and weaves together evidence both familiar (the European image of the green man and classical myths such as that of Daphne's transformation into a laurel tree) and highly unfamiliar (the magnificent hollow tree temples of India and Christian tree shrines). Superb photography which ranges from images of immense and ancient oaks and yews whose branches are propped up on stakes, through historically famous trees to temples built into hollow trees in rural India and the roots of ancient fig-trees flowing over abandonned Khmer temples.

"Jitterbug Perfume" by Tom Robbins My favorite fictional novel, Jitterbug Perfume is an epic which is to say, it begins in the forests of ancient Bohemia and doesn't conclude until nine o'clock tonight [Paris time]. It is a saga, as well. A saga must have a hero, and the hero of this one is a janitor with a missing bottle. The bottle is blue, very, very old, and embossed with the image of a goat-horned god. If the liquid in the bottle is actually the secret essence of the universe, as some folks think, it had better be discovered soon because it is leaking and there is only a drop or two left!"

"Dreamer" by Richard M. Miller. Many people are interested in doing past life regression in order to get a better handle on the events of this lifetime.
