by Judith Mora
London, 6 June 2002(EFE) - A British expedition announced today that it discovered the city in which the Incas sheltered duirng their flight from the Spanish conquistadors five hundred years ago. These ruins, in a valley adjacent to Machu Picchu, represent the greatest discovery in the area in recent decades, according to geographer Hugh Thomson, the expedition's director. The explorer added that the city discovered "is twice as large and much better preserved" than the ruins found by another British research team led by scholar Peter Frost in a nearby region last march. The site, known as Cota Coca, had remained forgottten in a remote valley where the Yanama and Blanco Rivers meet at the site of Vilcacamba in southeastern Perú, some 150 km south of the great natural fortress of Machu Picchu.![]()
