Theories Abound
In the 1980's one group constructed and flew a woven fabric hot-air balloon to prove the theory that the ancient Nazcans were capable of flight, still others equate the lines with water rituals, and as worship to the Apu, "spirits of the mountains". The most enduring theory was held by the German mathematician Maria Reiche who spent most of her life studying and protecting the lines. Maria Reiche believed the pampa was a giant astronomical calendar.

The nearby Paracan Candleabra sits high atop an atoll overlooking the Ballesta Isles
looking up and out to sea, it is believed to be associated with the Nazca Lines.
Spaceport of the Gods?
The ancient astronaut theory suggests the Nazca Lines may be vastly older then the accepted timeline.
In the early 1960's a cache of over 15,000 carved stones with many engravings depicting the Nazca Lines were unearthed just north of the Nazca pampa in the department of Ica. Among the startling etchings were hundreds of images illustrating an unknown space-faring civilization existing concurrent with the dinosaur.
More Lines Discovered
LIMA, Peru, Miami Herald -- Archaeologists have found ruins belonging to the Nazca civilization to which the authors of the famous Nazca Lines presumably belonged, Lima's El Comercio daily reports. The team responsible for the discovery headed by Peruvian archaeologist Johnny Islas and German archaeologist Markus Reidel started excavation of the site in 1996 under the sponsorship of the Swiss-Lichtenstein Foundation for Archaeological Research.
The site located 12 miles from Palpa in a desert area 248 miles south of Lima, contains two architectonic complexes identified as La Muņa and Los Molinos, in which numerous lines closely linked to those in the Nazca plains were found. Study of the ruins allowed for the identification of the area where the authors of the Nazca Lines lived and will permit future determination of the origin and development of these geoglyphs and the reasons why they were drawn.

At Molinos, physical evidence of great halls, palaces, residences and adobe buildings were found whereas La Muņa contained tombs of both common and high-ranking Nazca residents. The enigmatic origin of the Nazca Lines has given rise to abundant theories including one which attributes them to extraterrestrials.
The lines discovered by Peruvian archaeologist Mejia Xespe in 1927 spread over 217 square miles and depict more than 70 representations of animals, human beings and geometric figures, as well as 40 small triangular plazas. According to the late researcher and protectress of the lines, Maria Reiche, the figures represent an astronomical calendar and the first awakening of humanity to exact sciences.
Geoglyphs Found In Bolivia
Larger Than Those Of Nazca
CorreoPeru Lima May 2003 -- A group of archaeologists from the U.S. announced yesterday they have discovered the presence of geoglyph gigantic drawings in sand in an area of 22 kilometers near the National Park of Sajama in west Bolivia 16 times larger than the lines of Nazca, Peru. The important find consists of a group of lines "one to two meters in width" and "20 kilometers" in length, and in some cases form 436 distinct routes, and could be related to the Andean Cosmogony.
